Machine Installation - Part 2 - Bolt-on anti vibration mounts

A machine installation may have the requirement that the anti vibration mount is firmly connected to the machine and is therefore bolted on the machine bed. Read the reasons for it here.

In the first part of the "Machine Installation" series, we discussed the free-standing installation with anti vibration mounts and showed its advantage under the aspect of flexibility. However, the installation requirements of the machine can request a firm connection between the wedge mount and the machine. There can be various reasons for this request:

  • There are machine manufacturers whose machine passes various locations during the assembly process. They want the wedge mounts to remain on the machine when the machine is lifted and transported, so that the anti vibration mounts are automatically "carried along" to the new position. This is a rather logical request.

  • A frequent technical requirement comes from the high dynamic properties of the working machine. High horizontal acceleration forces can cause the machine to move on the anti vibration mounts as the coefficient of adhesion between the metallic surface of the machine and the anti-slipping pad of the wedge mount is lower than the coefficient of adhesion between anti-slipping pad and concrete floor. Typical applications are industrial injection molding machines for plastic material that can produce considerable horizontal forces, when they rapidly open and close the molding die in horizontal direction. In such a case, the anti vibration mount is bolted to the machine.

  • Bolting the wedge mount to the machine can also be recommended when high vertical acceleration forces occur. The machine can move on the wedge mounts here as well. Its inertia prevents the wedge mount from following the machine movement so that the machine can lift off the anti-slipping pad for a few milliseconds. Using bolted-on wedge mounts is an important safety factor, in particular for machines like steel cutting ma-chines with a frequently eccentric centre of gravity.

The upper anti-slipping pad is not usually used with the bolted-on wedge mounts. The force of the bolted connection provides a frictional grip between wedge mount and machine support point that is strong enough to ensure a secure connection.
